The Indian stock market ended higher for the second consecutive session on Tuesday, supported by optimism around GST rationalisation and a recent credit rating upgrade for India.
The Sensex closed at 81,644.39, up 370 points or 0.46 per cent, after opening with a gap-up at 81,399.11 against the previous close of 81,273.75. During the session, it touched an intra-day high of 81,755.88, led by strong buying in auto, FMCG, oil &amp; gas and select heavyweight stocks.
The Nifty50 also advanced 103.70 points or 0.42 per cent to settle at 24,980.65.
Analysts noted that renewed momentum was driven by hopes of GST rationalisation along with easing geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine, shifting the market outlook towards a constructive trend.
Among Sensex constituents, top gainers included Tata Motors, Adani Ports, Tech Mahindra, Hindustan Unilever, Kotak Bank, Maruti Suzuki, Bharti Airtel, Tata Steel, ITC, Ultratech Cement and Infosys. On the downside, Bajaj Finserv, Power Grid, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, HDFC Bank and BEL ended in the red.
Sectoral indices mostly finished in positive territory, with Nifty Auto rising 329 points (1.31 per cent) and Nifty FMCG climbing 582.40 points (1.05 per cent), extending the rally sparked by GST reforms. Nifty IT (up 121 points) and Nifty Bank (up 130 points) also gained ground.
Broader markets mirrored the trend. Nifty Midcap 100 rose 551 points (0.97 per cent), Nifty Smallcap 100 advanced 123 points (0.70 per cent), while Nifty 100 gained 120 points (0.47 per cent).
Technical experts highlighted that Nifty has sustained a sideways-to-bullish trend for two sessions after a gap-up opening. With prices holding above key moving averages (20, 50, 100, and 200 EMAs), the index shows strong underlying support. If Nifty sustains above 25,050, it could move towards 25,250 and 25,500 in the near term, analysts added.
