The Indian stock market closed in the red on Tuesday, impacted by global trade concerns following US President Donald Trump's fresh tariff threats and India&rsquo;s firm response.
The Sensex declined 308.47 points (0.38%) to settle at 80,710.25, slipping from its opening at 80,946.43. The Nifty ended 73 points lower at 24,649.55, down 0.30%.
Investor sentiment was mixed, with Auto and Consumer Durables showing resilience, while Pharma, Oil &amp; Gas, Construction, and FMCG stocks dragged the indices lower.
Top laggards included Reliance Industries, Infosys, ICICI Bank, BEL, Powergrid, and HDFC Bank. In contrast, Titan, Maruti, Trent, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finance, L&amp;T, SBI, and Tech Mahindra posted gains.
Banking stocks saw renewed selling pressure ahead of the RBI's monetary policy announcement scheduled for tomorrow. Sectoral indices like Nifty Fin Services, Nifty Bank, Nifty IT, and Nifty FMCG all closed in negative territory. However, Nifty Auto managed to stay in the green.
Meanwhile, the rupee weakened to 87.80 against the US dollar amid market anxiety over potential pressure from the US for India to reduce Russian oil imports. The currency briefly fell below the 88 mark but stabilized after a clarification from the Ministry of External Affairs reaffirmed India's crude purchase policy.
