Indian stock markets closed in the green on Tuesday, managing to hold on to gains despite unsettling news from the Middle East. Early optimism over a ceasefire between Iran and Israel gave way to caution as reports surfaced hinting at renewed hostilities.
The Sensex hit a high of 83,018.16 before settling at 82,055.11, up 158.32 points or 0.19%. The Nifty also showed resilience, rising 72.45 points or 0.29% to close at 25,044.35, after fluctuating between 25,317.70 and 24,999.70 during the session.
Analysts noted that the markets struggled to sustain momentum amid geopolitical uncertainty. Ajit Mishra of Religare Broking said the Nifty's inability to break past 25,200 reflects persistent bearish undertones.
Top gainers on the Nifty included Adani Ports, Shriram Finance, Grasim Industries, and Tata Steel, each posting a rise of 2.89%. Conversely, ONGC, IndusInd Bank, Power Grid, Trent, and HCL Technologies led the losers, dipping as much as 2.90%.
The broader market also reflected this cautious optimism, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 gaining 0.71% and 0.72%, respectively.
Volatility cooled slightly, with the India VIX falling 2.88% to 13.64, signalling some short-term calm.
Vinod Nair of Geojit Investments noted that while falling crude prices initially provided relief, further gains will depend on Q1 earnings and the strength of India&rsquo;s macroeconomic fundamentals.
