The Indian stock market surged on Monday as investors welcomed the government&rsquo;s move toward rationalising the Goods and Services Tax (GST). Strong buying across auto, banking, and FMCG stocks pushed benchmark indices sharply higher.
The Sensex closed at 81,273.75, gaining 676.09 points or 0.84%, after touching an intraday high of 81,765.77. Similarly, the Nifty ended at 24,876.95, up 245.65 points or 1%.
The rally was led by the auto sector, with Nifty Auto jumping 1,008 points (4.18%). Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Mahindra &amp; Mahindra saw significant gains, reflecting optimism that tax reforms would boost demand. Banking and financial counters also advanced, with Nifty Bank up 393 points and Nifty Financial Services up 275 points. FMCG stocks added further strength, while IT shares ended weakly.
Broader indices joined the rally: Nifty Midcap 100 gained 608 points and Nifty Small Cap 100 rose 242 points, showing robust investor participation across segments.
Meanwhile, the rupee appreciated 0.24 paise to close at 87.31 against the US dollar, with analysts expecting a trading range of 87.00&ndash;87.75.
Market experts believe that GST reforms could revive consumption-driven sectors in the coming quarters, while easing geopolitical tensions have also supported investor confidence.
