Gold prices fell sharply on Friday, tracking a softer global trend as fading expectations of an early US Federal Reserve rate cut weighed on investor sentiment. With traders reassessing the likelihood of monetary easing, the safe-haven rush that supported gold in recent weeks also eased.
On the Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold futures opened lower and stayed under pressure throughout the trading session. The December contract slipped by ₹1,186, or 0.94%, to close at ₹1,25,573 per 10 grams. Silver futures followed the same direction, with the December contract dropping 1.09% or ₹1,690 to ₹1,60,780 per kg.
According to the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA), 24-carat gold stood at ₹1,25,478 per 10 grams by mid-day, declining from Thursday&rsquo;s ₹1,26,554.
Traders significantly pared back expectations for a December Federal Reserve rate cut. Probability for a 25-basis-point cut has slipped to nearly 50%, while longer-term projections for 2026 remain unchanged. The reopening of the US government after a record 43-day shutdown has also reduced uncertainty, cooling safe-haven buying.
Earlier in the week, gold had rallied amid a weaker dollar, heightened safe-haven demand, and increased domestic demand ahead of the peak wedding season. Analysts had highlighted that precious metals were on track for their strongest weekly gains in a month, supported by uncertainty created by the absence of US economic data during the shutdown.
However, the upside remained restricted as Federal Reserve officials signalled that immediate easing was unlikely. Even so, strong physical buying from major markets such as China and Australia continues to provide structural support for bullion prices.
Commodity expert Rahul Kalantri noted that gold currently holds support at ₹1,25,750&ndash;₹1,24,980 and faces resistance at ₹1,27,750&ndash;₹1,28,400. Silver, meanwhile, has support at ₹1,60,950&ndash;₹1,59,400 and resistance at ₹1,63,850&ndash;₹1,64,900.
