The Telangana High Court has set aside the state government&rsquo;s decision to allot 3.5 acres of prime land in Raidurgam to the International Arbitration and Mediation Centre (IAMC) in Hyderabad.
A division bench of Justice K. Lakshman and Justice K. Sujana pronounced the judgment on Friday while disposing of two Public Interest Litigations (PILs) that questioned the legality of the land and financial support extended to the private arbitration body.
Petitioner Advocate K. Raghunath Rao argued that the land, worth ₹350 crore in the city&rsquo;s IT corridor, was allotted in violation of rules and Supreme Court guidelines. The court also cancelled the government order related to the construction of IAMC&rsquo;s building.
While the state defended its decision citing IAMC&rsquo;s role in promoting institutional arbitration, the court questioned the necessity of allocating high-value real estate when vacant government buildings were available.
The government had earlier allocated ₹50 crore for the construction, with the then CJI N.V. Ramana laying the foundation in 2022 and highlighting IAMC&rsquo;s international potential. The centre has been operating from temporary premises in Gachibowli since 2021.
Despite claims that IAMC would match global arbitration hubs like Singapore and Dubai, the court's ruling raises concerns about public resource usage for private trusts, even if partially state-led.
