The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear on 10 October a batch of petitions challenging the Madras High Court&rsquo;s refusal to order a CBI probe into the Karur <a title="Karur Stampede" href="https://www.benefitnews24.com/india/karur-rally-stampede-toll-rises-to-39-dead/19944" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stampede</a> of 27 September, which claimed 41 lives and left over 60 injuredduring a political rally of actor and TVK leader Vijay.
A Bench headed by Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran took note of the plea filed by BJP leader Uma Anandan, who contended that the investigation by the state police lacked credibility and transparency. The Bench ordered the matter to be listed for hearing on Friday.
Earlier, on 3 October, the Madras High Court had rejected calls for a CBI probe, instead constituting a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct the inquiry. The High Court had observed that the state police probe was still at a nascent stage, cautioning that the judiciary should not be turned into a political platform.

The High Court&rsquo;s order followed a series of petitions filed after the deadly stampede at Vijay&rsquo;s rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. Permission had reportedly been granted for a gathering of about 10,000 people, but the turnout swelled to over 25,000, with many waiting for hours under harsh conditions without proper amenities. The narrow approach roads, poor crowd management, and blocked exit routes turned the event catastrophic.
An FIR was registered against several functionaries of TVK, excluding Vijay, under provisions relating to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, negligence, and failure to ensure crowd safety.
The Tamil Nadu government has since assured the court that it will not allow any political rallies or public gatherings near state or national highways until new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are framed.
The petitioners have now turned to the Supreme Court, arguing that only a central agency investigation can ensure accountability and restore public confidence. The apex court will take up the matter on 10 October for detailed consideration.
