The Supreme Court has asked Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami and the West Bengal government to file their responses to a petition by Shami&rsquo;s estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, who has sought a revision of the monthly maintenance she receives following their separation.
A bench of the Supreme Court, while hearing the matter, observed that the maintenance amount already directed by the Calcutta High Court appeared to be &ldquo;quite handsome&rdquo; as an interim arrangement.
In July, the Calcutta High Court had ordered Shami to pay a total of ₹4 lakh per month to his wife and daughter. The bench of Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee had directed that ₹1.5 lakh be paid to Hasin Jahan and ₹2.5 lakh to their daughter each month. The court noted that the amount was fair and reasonable to ensure their financial stability.
Hasin Jahan, however, had demanded a total maintenance of ₹10 lakh per month , ₹7 lakh for herself and ₹3 lakh for her daughter. Her plea for a higher amount was not accepted by the High Court, which instead enhanced the previous order of ₹1.3 lakh per month that had been fixed by a district court in 2023.
The couple, who married in 2014, separated in 2018 after Hasin Jahan filed an FIR against the fast bowler, accusing him of domestic violence and mental harassment. Since then, the two have been engaged in a prolonged legal battle involving allegations, counterclaims, and financial disputes.
With the Supreme Court now issuing notices to both Shami and the West Bengal government, the matter will be taken up for further hearing after the parties file their replies.
