The Supreme Court on Friday sharply rebuked a Delhi-based NGO for filing a petition that attempted to reopen a judgment the court had already delivered, calling it an effort to &ldquo;crumble the judiciary.&rdquo; The bench, visibly upset, imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on the group, United Voice for Education Forum.
&ldquo;You cannot do this to the Supreme Court. We are enraged,&rdquo; the bench said, warning that such petitions strike at the foundation of the institution. &ldquo;This is against the entire system of judiciary in this country. Don&rsquo;t bring it down by filing such cases.&rdquo;
The judges also expressed disbelief that lawyers were advising people to challenge the Supreme Court&rsquo;s own decisions through fresh petitions. &ldquo;What is happening here? Advocates are giving such advice? This is the grossest abuse,&rdquo; the court remarked.
The petition in question asked the court to revisit its earlier decision that exempted minority-run schools from certain requirements under the Right to Education Act. The petitioners argued that all schools, regardless of management, should follow the same rules for admissions and inclusivity.
The NGO had also asked for an expert panel to create a new framework balancing minority rights with equal access to education. But the court dismissed the effort as inappropriate, especially since another bench had already sent related questions to a larger bench for review.
&ldquo;Let this be a message to others,&rdquo; the court said while imposing costs. &ldquo;You want to crumble the judiciary of this country.&rdquo;
The issue of how minority-run schools fit into India&rsquo;s broader education landscape has sparked fresh debate in recent months, with some judges expressing concern that sweeping exemptions could undermine the goal of inclusive schooling. The Supreme Court&rsquo;s strong reaction today signals that while the debate may continue, attempts to bypass established judicial processes will not be tolerated.
