The Bench, presided over by Chief Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, dismissed the plea seeking a stay on the Rs 229-crore maritime infrastructure project, thereby upholding the Bombay High Court&rsquo;s earlier refusal to interfere with its execution.</p>
<p data-start="630" data-end="1122">The apex court observed that the project, which aims to modernise water transport facilities in south Mumbai, appeared to be in furtherance of broader public interest. The Chief Justice noted, in passing, the transformative impact of infrastructure projects such as the Mumbai Coastal Road, pointing to the significant reduction in travel time between Worli and Marine Drive &mdash; from three hours to 40 minutes &mdash; as a demonstrable example of civic improvement through large-scale urban planning.</p>
<p data-start="1124" data-end="1598">While acknowledging the petitioners&rsquo; concerns, the Court was unconvinced by arguments centred on the absence of prior public consultation and alleged disregard for local stakeholder engagement. The petitioners had submitted that the jetty and terminal, sited near the historic Radio Club and approximately 500 metres from the Gateway of India, would adversely affect over two lakh residents in Colaba due to increased maritime activity and disruption to the urban landscape.</p>
<p data-start="1600" data-end="2059">The proposed facility comprises a berthing jetty capable of accommodating up to 20 boats concurrently, a passenger terminal with a 350-seat amphitheatre, and accompanying infrastructure including a fire safety system, surveillance equipment, and landscaped public spaces. According to planning documents, the development is intended to decongest current marine routes and rechannel boat traffic away from the heavily frequented Gateway of India landing point.</p>
<p data-start="2061" data-end="2437">The Supreme Court did not make a determination on the merits of the environmental or procedural claims, noting that these substantive matters are pending before the Bombay High Court, which is scheduled to resume hearings on 20 June. However, the apex court directed the High Court to ensure an expedited hearing, indicating the matter&rsquo;s continuing legal and civic importance.</p>
<p data-start="2439" data-end="2642" data-is-last-node="" data-is-only-node="">Construction is expected to reach completion within two years, with authorities projecting a significant upgrade in the operational efficiency and passenger experience of Mumbai&rsquo;s water transport system.</p>
