A retired government school teacher caused a major disruption inside a Delhi courtroom on April 2 after being convicted in a cheque bounce case under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.
The incident unfolded when the court, presided over by Judicial Magistrate (NI Act) Shivangi Mangla, delivered a judgment against the 63-year-old accused.&nbsp;
Enraged by the verdict, the teacher reacted violently and launched into a threatening tirade directed at the magistrate. According to official court records, he shouted: "Tu hai kya cheez... tu bahar mil, dekhte hain kaise zinda ghar jaati hai" (Who are you... just meet me outside and let&rsquo;s see how you make it back home alive).
The convict&rsquo;s actions escalated as he attempted to throw an object at the judge. The court&rsquo;s order noted that he became furious upon hearing the decision and used abusive language, including personal remarks targeting the judge&rsquo;s family. The judge further recorded that the accused tried to pressurise her to alter the verdict in his favour.
&ldquo;The accused started harassing the judge in open court... tried to throw an object at the judge for not passing an order in his favour,&rdquo; the court&rsquo;s order stated.
In a further escalation, the accused and his counsel, advocate Atul Kumar, allegedly engaged in both mental and physical harassment of the judge, insisting that she resign from her position if she did not reverse the ruling.
The judge wrote in her official notes: &ldquo;They harassed me and threatened to file complaints if I didn&rsquo;t acquit the accused,&rdquo; while affirming her commitment to uphold the rule of law despite intimidation.
Magistrate Shivangi Mangla announced her intention to file a complaint with the National Commission for Women (NCW) concerning the threats and harassment endured in the courtroom. In response to the conduct of the defence counsel, a show-cause notice was issued to advocate Atul Kumar, requiring him to explain why criminal contempt proceedings should not be initiated against him for his behaviour during the court proceedings.
The lawyer was directed to submit a written explanation by the next hearing date, scheduled for April 5.
On that date, the court sentenced the retired teacher to 22 months of simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 6.65 lakh. However, the judge suspended the sentence for a period of one month, following the convict&rsquo;s submission of a plea before the Sessions Court challenging the order.&nbsp;
The suspension was granted on the condition that the convict furnished personal and surety bonds amounting to Rs 30,000.
