A Delhi court has asked Sonia Gandhi and the Delhi Police to respond to a petition questioning how her name appeared on the New Delhi voter list in 1980, three years before she officially became an Indian citizen in 1983. The issue has resurfaced after petitioner Vikas Tripathi challenged an earlier decision that dismissed his request for an investigation.
According to the petition, Gandhi&rsquo;s name was recorded on the voter list in 1980, removed in 1982, and then added again in 1983. Tripathi argues that this sequence raises concerns about how the documents were processed and whether any paperwork may have been falsified. He says he approached the police to look into the matter, but no case was registered.
The earlier order had dismissed the complaint on the grounds that the material provided was insufficient and that questions about citizenship and voter-roll eligibility should be handled by designated authorities rather than criminal courts. Tripathi has now appealed this ruling.
During the hearing, the court noted the seriousness of the allegations and decided to seek a response from both Sonia Gandhi and the Delhi Police. The case has also drawn public attention because the notice was issued on Gandhi&rsquo;s birthday, prompting discussions about timing and political sensitivity.
The matter will be heard again on January 6, 2026, when the court is expected to examine the previous records and decide whether further action is needed.
