In a significant legal and parliamentary development, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday confirmed that he has initiated consultations with major Opposition parties, including the Congress, to build consensus on an impending motion for the impeachment of Justice Yashwant Varma. The motion is likely to be brought before both Houses of Parliament during the forthcoming monsoon session.

Speaking on the matter, Rijiju clarified that the initiative is not driven by political motivations but is aimed at preserving the sanctity and credibility of the judiciary. &ldquo;This is an issue of national importance and judicial accountability. I have appealed to all parties to stand together on this,&rdquo; he said.
According to a senior government functionary familiar with internal discussions, the motion will be tabled by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. Since an impeachment motion requires a two-thirds majority in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, efforts are underway to secure cross-party backing.

Late on Tuesday evening, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda, and Law Minister Meghwal held a closed-door meeting to review the legislative strategy. The trio later met with Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, according to an official brief. However, there was no formal statement issued regarding the substance of these meetings.
This parliamentary move follows an earlier communication from former Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging immediate action. Justice Khanna reportedly emphasised the gravity of the allegations after substantial cash was found at Justice Varma&rsquo;s official residence in Delhi in March.
On 5 May, an in-house enquiry panel submitted its findings to the Chief Justice of India, confirming that bundles of currency were recovered from a storeroom within Justice Varma&rsquo;s premises. The recovery came to light after a fire incident on 14 March, during which half-charred notes were discovered inside a sack. Police personnel reportedly documented the scene via video, reinforcing the evidence trail.
