The Central Government has approved the appointment of advocates Gautam Ashwin Ankhad and Mahendra Madhavrao Nerlikar as Additional Judges of the Bombay High Court, based on the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium.
A notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice stated that both will serve for a two-year term under Article 224(1) of the Constitution, effective from the date they assume charge.
Advocate Ankhad, recommended in September 2023 by the SC Collegium led by then CJI D.Y. Chandrachud, has a strong background in commercial, contract, and arbitration law. His average net income of ₹226.55 lakh over five years and his involvement in 56 reported judgments reflect substantial legal practice.
Advocate Nerlikar, who belongs to the Scheduled Caste category, brings over 20 years of experience in civil, criminal, constitutional, labour, and service law. He has served the Maharashtra government in various legal roles, including Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor.
Their appointments follow the due procedure under the Memorandum of Procedure (MoP) for judicial appointments, involving multi-tier recommendations from the Chief Justice of the High Court to the President of India, via the Law Ministry and Supreme Court Collegium.
