A CBI special court in Ahmedabad on Monday sentenced a former Divisional Engineer of Western Railway, Bhavnagar, to three years of rigorous imprisonment in a decade old bribery case. The court also imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on the convict.
Shri Harish Kishore Gupta, then serving as Divisional Engineer (C) at Bhavnagar Para, DRM Office, Western Railway, was found guilty of demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹5,000 from a railway contractor in exchange for issuing a work order and approving an extension of contract time. The total contract value stood at ₹19.91 lakh.
The case was originally registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on July 15, 2010, based on a complaint from the contractor. Gupta was caught red handed and arrested on July 16, 2010. Subsequent searches at his residence and office led to further evidence being gathered.
A charge sheet was filed by the CBI on June 29, 2011, under charges related to criminal misconduct and accepting illegal gratification under the Prevention of Corruption Act. After a full trial, the Special Judge for CBI Cases pronounced the verdict, holding Gupta guilty of all charges.
The judgment is a reminder of the legal consequences for corrupt public officials and reinforces the role of investigative agencies in upholding accountability within government institutions.
