With 75 per cent of the votes counted, Mamdani secured 50.4 per cent, while his closest rival, Andrew Cuomo, garnered 41.3 per cent. The declaration came at 9:34 p.m. EST after a tightly contested race across all five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island.
Mamdani&rsquo;s win marks a milestone in New York&rsquo;s political history, making him the first Muslim and Indian-origin individual to hold the city&rsquo;s highest office. He will officially assume charge on January 1, 2026, succeeding Eric Adams.
The 34-year-old Democratic Socialist assemblymember from Queens also becomes the youngest New York mayor in more than a century. His campaign gained strong momentum after a decisive 12-point victory in the Democratic primary earlier this year.
Despite challenges, including criticism from national political figures and shifting party endorsements, Mamdani maintained steady voter support. Former Governor Andrew Cuomo, endorsed by U.S. President Donald Trump just before the election, trailed behind in the final count.
