Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his gratitude to US President Donald Trump for backing Ukraine&rsquo;s fight for sovereignty and his commitment to achieving a &ldquo;lasting and just peace&rdquo; with Russia.
Following what he described as a &ldquo;very good conversation,&rdquo; Zelensky posted on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, thanking Trump for his willingness to support Ukraine and work toward ending the ongoing war.
&ldquo;Thank you for the willingness to support Ukraine and to continue working together to stop the killings and establish a lasting and just peace,&rdquo; Zelensky wrote. He confirmed that Trump shared details about his meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and emphasised the importance of growing defence cooperation among alliance members.
Zelensky said both leaders discussed specific solutions to improve Ukrainian defence capabilities and agreed to maintain regular coordination moving forward. &ldquo;Thank you, Mr. President! Thank you, America!&rdquo; he concluded.
This conversation came shortly after Trump warned Russia of harsh secondary tariffs, up to 100%, on nations importing Russian energy, if no ceasefire deal is reached within 50 days. Speaking alongside NATO chief Mark Rutte at the White House, Trump said he was &ldquo;very unhappy&rdquo; with Russia's stance on peace.
Zelensky also held a separate call with Rutte, who updated him on NATO&rsquo;s coordination with the US and efforts to provide additional Patriot missile systems and other defence support. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s important to increase pressure on Russia for the sake of peace and to save lives,&rdquo; Zelensky said.
