Rescuers pulled a woman alive from the rubble of the Great Wall Hotel in Mandalay, nearly 60 hours after a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar. The quake, which hit on Friday, has killed around 2,000 people and caused widespread destruction in Myanmar and neighbouring Thailand.
The Chinese embassy in Myanmar confirmed the rescue in a Facebook post, stating that the woman was in stable condition. The operation offered a rare moment of hope amid a rising death toll and ongoing rescue efforts.
Myanmar&rsquo;s state media reported at least 1,700 confirmed deaths, while other media houses have put the toll at 2,028. The United Nations estimated that 23,000 people in central Myanmar need immediate aid and has begun rushing relief supplies to affected areas.
&ldquo;Our teams in Mandalay are joining efforts to scale up the humanitarian response despite going through the trauma themselves,&rdquo;&nbsp;Noriko Takagi, the UN refugee agency&rsquo;s representative in Myanmar&nbsp;told the media. &ldquo;Time is of the essence as Myanmar needs global solidarity and support through this immense devastation.&rdquo;
International aid has started pouring in from India, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Russia. The United States has pledged $2 million in aid through Myanmar-based humanitarian groups and has deployed an emergency response team from USAID.
In Bangkok, emergency teams resumed search operations for 76 people believed to be trapped under the rubble of an under-construction skyscraper that collapsed due to the quake. Thailand&rsquo;s death toll stood at 18 as of Sunday, but officials fear it may rise as more bodies are recovered.
