American flags across the United States are flying at half-staff this weekend following a combination of national and state-level orders issued in remembrance of both historic and recent sacrifices.
The primary reason is the observance of National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day on December 7, which marks 84 years since the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. 
The attack claimed the lives of 2,403 U.S. military personnel and civilians and led to America&rsquo;s entry into World War II. 
As mandated by Congress, flags are lowered every year on this date as a mark of national honor and reflection.
At the same time, flags were already lowered nationwide following a presidential order issued after the fatal shooting of Sarah Beckstrom, a member of the West Virginia National Guard. 
She was killed in the line of duty on November 26 near Washington, D.C. The national mourning for her was observed through December 4.
In addition to the federal directives, several state governors have issued their own half-staff proclamations to honor fallen public servants and victims of local tragedies. 
States such as Iowa also ordered flags to remain at half-staff in advance to align with the Pearl Harbor commemoration.
Across many states and communities, the lowered flags serve as a tribute to the courageous service members and civilians who sacrificed their lives in service to the nation. 
The observance is described as a gesture of national honor, recognizing the patriotism, valor, sacrifice, and resilience of those who defended the country.
