The White House has quietly updated its fact sheet on the proposed India&ndash;US trade framework, removing or softening several claims after New Delhi raised concerns over language that suggested commitments beyond what had been agreed.
One major revision involves agricultural tariffs. An earlier version stated that India would reduce duties on &ldquo;certain pulses,&rdquo; placing them alongside products such as tree nuts, soybean oil, wine, and spirits. The updated document drops any reference to pulses, a crop that holds political and economic importance in India, which is both the world&rsquo;s largest producer and consumer of lentils, chickpeas, and dry beans. The change indicates that India objected to how the provision was characterised.
Another adjustment relates to digital taxation. The original fact sheet claimed India would remove its digital services tax. This has now been replaced with wording that says India has agreed only to negotiate digital trade rules. Notably, India had already scrapped its 6% equalisation levy on digital advertising services from April 1, 2025, through the Finance Bill 2025, months before the trade framework surfaced.
The language around American exports has also been diluted. Instead of stating that India had &ldquo;committed to buy&rdquo; $500 billion worth of US goods, the revised version says India &ldquo;intends to buy&rdquo; more American products, aligning the phrasing with the joint statement issued by both countries on February 7. Additionally, the term &ldquo;agricultural&rdquo; has been removed from the purchase list.
There has been no immediate response from the White House regarding the edits, which underscores the sensitivity surrounding trade negotiations between the two strategic partners.
