Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will travel to India on August 18 for the 24th round of Special Representatives&rsquo; talks on the long-pending boundary issue between the two countries. The discussions will take place in New Delhi at the invitation of the Indian government, Beijing confirmed on Saturday.
According to China&rsquo;s Foreign Ministry, Wang Yi will hold meetings in India between August 18 and 20 as part of efforts to restore momentum in the stalled dialogue process. The visit comes just days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to travel to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1.
China has formally welcomed PM Modi&rsquo;s participation in the SCO meet, with officials in Beijing expressing confidence that the summit will strengthen regional cooperation and mark a &ldquo;new stage of high-quality development&rdquo; for the organisation. Leaders from more than 20 countries and representatives of 10 international organisations are expected to attend what Beijing has described as the largest SCO gathering since its inception.
This will be Prime Minister Modi&rsquo;s first visit to China since the deadly Galwan Valley clash in 2020, which left ties between New Delhi and Beijing severely strained. Recent progress on patrolling arrangements along the 3,500-km Line of Actual Control has opened the door for renewed engagement.
The latest outreach follows a series of high-level exchanges between the two countries. In July, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited Tianjin for an SCO meeting, where he also met Wang Yi and called on Chinese President Xi Jinping. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval had also travelled to China earlier this year for SCO-related dialogues, where India pressed for stronger action against terrorism and opposed any dilution of anti-terror commitments in joint declarations.
