Severe flooding across central Vietnam has pushed the death toll to 98, with 10 people still missing, as continuous heavy rains battered residential areas, farmland and key infrastructure. According to the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority, more than 2,000 houses were damaged and 426 completely collapsed, leaving thousands displaced and struggling for basic necessities.
Agriculture the backbone of the region has taken a massive hit. Over 51,800 hectares of rice fields and crops remain underwater, while nearly one million livestock and poultry have been lost. Initial assessments place the economic damage at 14.3 trillion Vietnamese dong (about USD 570 million), making this one of the region&rsquo;s worst weather disasters in recent years.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has urged local administrations to ramp up relief operations and accelerate rescue missions. The government has already approved emergency assistance of 700 billion dong (USD 26.6 million) and an additional 450 billion dong (USD 17.9 million) for the worst-hit provinces, including Hue, Da Nang, Quang Tri and Quang Ngai. Authorities say over 28,400 homes remain inundated and 75,000 households are still without power.
As the region struggles to recover, officials warn that the true scale of damage may rise once floodwaters recede. The crisis follows a series of extreme weather events in Vietnam this year, underscoring the country&rsquo;s growing vulnerability to climate-driven disasters. Emergency teams continue to work round-the-clock to restore connectivity, deliver aid and search for those still missing.
