The U.S. Supreme Court has lifted a federal district court order that had temporarily preserved humanitarian parole protections for over 500,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.
The ruling also permits the Trump administration to revoke temporary legal status for approximately 350,000 Venezuelan migrants in a separate case, according to local media reports. This decision opens the door for nearly one million migrants to potentially face deportation.
In response to the surge of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border, the Biden administration launched a humanitarian parole program between late 2022 and early 2023. This initiative allowed eligible individuals from the four nations to work legally in the United States for two years, offering temporary protection to an estimated 532,000 people.
However, after beginning his second presidential term, Donald Trump issued an executive order instructing Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to terminate all existing parole programs. In March, Noem formally announced the program's end, stating that any remaining parole grants would expire by April 24.
A group of 23 plaintiffs&mdash;including affected migrants and a nonprofit organization&mdash;challenged the termination in court. A federal judge in Massachusetts temporarily blocked the administration's move. When the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit declined to halt the lower court&rsquo;s ruling during the appeal, the Trump administration turned to the Supreme Court, which has now sided with the executive order.
The decision marks a significant shift in immigration policy, with far-reaching implications for hundreds of thousands of migrants who had been granted temporary protection.
