A day after King Charles III formally stripped Andrew of his royal titles, a group of United States lawmakers has asked Britain&rsquo;s disgraced former prince to testify before Congress about his long-standing ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
In a letter signed by 16 Democratic members of the US House of Representatives, Andrew now officially addressed as&nbsp;&ldquo;Mr Mountbatten-Windsor&rdquo; was asked to sit for a transcribed interview as part of an ongoing congressional investigation into Epstein&rsquo;s network. The lawmakers wrote, &ldquo;The committee is seeking to uncover the identities of Mr Epstein&rsquo;s co-conspirators and enablers and to understand the full extent of his criminal operations.&rdquo; Citing his association with Epstein, they added, &ldquo;You may possess knowledge of his activities relevant to our investigation.&rdquo; Andrew was asked to reply by November 20, though Congress cannot compel a foreigner to testify.
The letter lands at a turbulent moment for the 64-year-old former royal. In a rare move not seen since 1919, King Charles officially revoked Andrew&rsquo;s right to be styled as &ldquo;His Royal Highness&rdquo; and stripped him of the title of Prince &mdash; a decision published in the UK&rsquo;s public record on Wednesday. It also marked the end of his residency at Windsor&rsquo;s Royal Lodge, forcing him to relocate to private accommodation. Andrew had already relinquished the Duke of York title in October after new allegations resurfaced in Virginia Giuffre&rsquo;s posthumous memoir.
Lawmakers cited Giuffre&rsquo;s allegations in their letter, including her claim that she feared &ldquo;retaliation if she made allegations against&rdquo; Andrew and that he instructed a protection officer to &ldquo;dig up dirt&rdquo; on her in 2011. The letter states, &ldquo;This fear of retaliation has been a persistent obstacle to many of those who were victimised in their fight for justice.&rdquo; Giuffre, who accused Epstein of trafficking her to Andrew when she was 17, died by suicide in Australia earlier this year. Andrew has denied all allegations and faced no criminal charges, though he paid a multimillion-pound settlement in 2022 to resolve her civil lawsuit.
Meanwhile, in the US, Epstein&rsquo;s connections in New Mexico are again under scrutiny. State lawmakers on Thursday proposed creating a &ldquo;truth commission&rdquo; to investigate alleged abuse at Zorro Ranch &mdash; Epstein&rsquo;s remote desert estate, complete with a private runway, where survivors claim trafficking also occurred. &ldquo;This commission will specifically seek the truth about what officials knew, how crimes were unreported or reported, and how the state can ensure this never happens again,&rdquo; said State Representative Andrea Romero. She noted that &ldquo;there&rsquo;s no complete record of what occurred.&rdquo;
Representative Marianna Anaya told colleagues that authorities had multiple chances over the years to intervene, while Republican member Andrea Reeb added that New Mexicans &ldquo;have a right to know what happened at this ranch.&rdquo; The proposal will move forward when the state legislature reconvenes in January.
As investigations widen on both sides of the Atlantic, Andrew faces mounting pressure, not only from US lawmakers but also from a public reckoning within his own former royal household.
