US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that a high-level American delegation will travel to London on Monday, 9 June 2025, for crucial trade negotiations with Chinese officials. The delegation includes Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer.
Sharing the news on social media, Trump stated: "I am pleased to announce that Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and United States Trade Representative, Ambassador Jamieson Greer, will be meeting in London on Monday, June 9, 2025, with Representatives of China, with reference to the Trade Deal. The meeting should go very well. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"
A key issue on the agenda is the global supply of rare earth minerals, which are essential for high-tech manufacturing and defence applications. China's recent suspension of certain rare earth exports to the United States has raised alarm over potential vulnerabilities in the supply chain. During the talks, both parties are expected to explore mechanisms to ensure a stable and secure flow of these critical resources, while also addressing broader concerns such as tariff frameworks and ongoing trade imbalances.
This diplomatic engagement comes amid persistent trade tensions between Washington and Beijing. On Thursday, Trump said he had held a 'good conversation' with Chinese President Xi Jinping and that they had resolved several complex issues. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump revealed that Xi had extended an invitation for him to visit China, which he accepted, and that he had likewise invited Xi to the United States.
Trump reassured reporters that relations between the two countries were on solid footing, stating, 'We had a very good talk and we've straightened out any complexity. It's very complex stuff, and we&rsquo;ve straightened it out.' He emphasised that the United States is in 'very good shape' regarding the trade deal with China.
China&rsquo;s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the phone call was initiated by Trump, during which Xi urged the US to remove 'negative measures' currently imposed on Beijing. In a conciliatory move, Trump also expressed support for Chinese students studying in the United States, despite ongoing restrictions on visas.
