Effective December 15, applicants are now required to make their social media profiles public as part of what the US State Department describes as enhanced national security checks. The move reinforces Washington&rsquo;s position that a US visa is a &ldquo;privilege, not a right.&rdquo;
The expanded review applies not only to H-1B and H-4 applicants but also aligns them with students and exchange visitors already subject to online presence scrutiny. Authorities say the screening aims to identify individuals deemed &ldquo;inadmissible,&rdquo; particularly those who may pose threats to public safety or national security. Visa officers have been instructed to use all available digital information to assess whether applicants intend to comply with the terms of their entry.
Indians are expected to be the most affected by the new rule, as they account for over 70 per cent of all H-1B visas. Nearly 300,000 Indian professionals, largely employed in technology and services, could face delays, uncertainty, or heightened scrutiny. Even before the screening began, several visa interviews in India were rescheduled, leaving applicants stranded and employers struggling to manage prolonged absences.
The policy has triggered widespread concern among visa holders and civil liberties advocates, with critics warning of intrusive surveillance and vague standards. While officials have not detailed exactly what content will be flagged, the focus is understood to include support for extremist groups, hate speech, or activities inconsistent with visa conditions. As the rule comes into force, thousands of Indian workers are now reassessing their digital footprint, aware that past posts could shape their future in the United States.
