Uruguay&rsquo;s Senate has passed a law decriminalizing euthanasia, making it the first predominantly Catholic Latin American country to allow adults with incurable illnesses to legally seek medical assistance to end their lives. The law was passed with 20 out of 31 senators voting in favour, following approval by the lower house in August. The government will now implement regulations to operationalise the legislation.
The law permits euthanasia performed by healthcare professionals but does not allow assisted suicide, where patients self-administer lethal medication. Unlike other countries, Uruguay sets no time limits on life expectancy, requires no waiting period, and enables any patient suffering from unbearable suffering due to incurable illness to request euthanasia. Patients must be mentally competent, and two doctors must clear those with mental conditions like depression.
Uruguay has a strong record of socially liberal policies, including legalising recreational marijuana, same-sex marriage, and abortion. The new euthanasia legislation strengthens its reputation as a progressive nation in Latin America. Unlike Belgium, Colombia, and the Netherlands, the law excludes minors from seeking euthanasia.
The legislation is expected to spark debates about end-of-life care while giving adults with incurable conditions the legal right to die with dignity.
