The United Nations has condemned a deadly airstrike carried out by Myanmar&rsquo;s military in the Sagaing Region, which killed at least 24 civilians, including several children, during a religious celebration earlier this week. The organisation described the incident as part of a disturbing pattern of violence against civilians.
The attack occurred in Chaung-U township on Monday, where residents had gathered for a national religious festival. Reports suggest that a motorised paraglider dropped two explosives on the crowd, leaving over 45 people injured.
UN spokesperson St&eacute;phane Dujarric stated that the strike reflects a concerning trend of assaults targeting non-combatants across Myanmar. He reiterated that the indiscriminate use of airborne munitions violates international humanitarian and human rights laws, calling on all parties to adhere to global legal standards.
Sagaing Region remains one of the areas most affected by conflict since the February 2021 coup that overthrew Myanmar&rsquo;s elected government, detaining President Win Myint and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi. The region has also struggled with a severe earthquake earlier this year, worsening the humanitarian situation.
According to the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR), Sagaing has recorded the highest number of airstrikes and civilian deaths nationwide, with over 100 air attacks and 89 fatalities between March and May 2025. Despite ceasefire announcements for earthquake relief, the military continues to use air power against populated areas.
The UN has renewed its call for an end to violence, accountability for those responsible, and stronger protection for civilians in Myanmar.
