Two major Russian airports faced flight restrictions early Saturday following an alleged Ukrainian drone attack, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. According to Russian media, the Federal Air Transport Agency imposed a temporary ban on landings and takeoffs at Kazan International Airport and partial restrictions at Gagarin Airport in Saratov.
Kazan, over 600 miles from Ukrainian-controlled territory and approximately 700 kilometres (435 miles) east of Moscow, has previously faced drone attacks. However, Saturday's assault is the first to directly impact residential buildings. Saratov, situated about 350 miles from Ukraine, also faced heightened security measures.
Reports indicate that eight drones were involved in the attack. Four struck two high-rise residential buildings, including the Manhattan housing complex and Lazurny Nebes residential high-rise, where fires broke out before being controlled by emergency responders. Another drone hit a low-rise residential building, while the remaining targeted an industrial enterprise and a river area.
Tatarstan regional head Rustam Minnikhanov described the attack as unprecedented in scale, noting that emergency services swiftly evacuated affected residents, established temporary shelters, and provided essential aid. Kazan Mayor Ilsur Metshin reported fires in three city districts and ordered selective evacuations of schools where deemed necessary.
Russia's Defence Ministry stated that six Ukrainian drones were intercepted&mdash;three shot down and three neutralised via electronic warfare systems. The attack reportedly came in three coordinated waves from different directions.
In response, Ukraine faced a heavy overnight assault, with Russia launching 113 drones into Ukrainian territory. Ukraine's air force claimed to have downed 57 drones, while another 56 went unaccounted for due to countermeasures. Air raid sirens rang across Ukraine, and the air force warned of possible ballistic missile threats.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported significant damage in multiple regions, including an oncology centre in Kherson and residential buildings in Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia. Kyiv endured ballistic missile strikes, while Sumy, Kryvyi Rih, and Dnipropetrovsk also faced heavy shelling.
"This is the Russian terror we are countering," Zelenskyy stated on X. "I am grateful to our partners who continue to stand with Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia. Together, through our collective strength, we will secure a lasting peace."
The attack follows Friday's missile and drone strike on Kyiv, which resulted in fatalities, damage to foreign embassies, and widespread destruction. Ukrainian officials labelled the assault as "barbaric," underscoring the intensifying nature of the conflict.
