Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Monday that Ukraine is officially aligning with the European Union&rsquo;s latest sanctions against Iran. Calling Tehran "one of the most brutal regimes in the world," Zelensky cited its role in military production, external aggression, and internal repression.
In a video posted on X, Zelensky also linked Iran&rsquo;s regime to Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying it was no surprise they found &ldquo;common ground.&rdquo;
He emphasised that intensifying global sanctions against Russia remains crucial to weaken Moscow&rsquo;s war machine.
Zelensky further revealed that Ukraine is withdrawing from the Ottawa Convention, which bans anti-personnel mines &mdash; a move he described as a necessary wartime step. While acknowledging the controversy around the decision, he said Ukraine must send a signal to partners that such mines often have no alternative in defending borders, especially against a country like Russia, which uses them with "extreme cynicism."
The decree, enacted through the National Security and Defence Council, marks a significant shift in Ukraine&rsquo;s military posture as the war continues.
