French President Emmanuel Macron underscored the importance of a firm deterrent against Russia and other potential aggressors:
"Abandoning Ukraine without security guarantees would weaken deterrence against Russia, China, and others."
In the wake of increasing Russian offensives, Macron warned that the&nbsp;"coming days will most probably be increasingly tougher"&nbsp;for Ukraine. His reaffirmation of European sanctions against Russia, initially imposed three years ago, highlights France&rsquo;s long-term commitment to countering Moscow&rsquo;s expansionist ambitions.
UK Takes a Leadership Role
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a new initiative&mdash;a&nbsp;"coalition of the willing"&mdash;which will draft a peace plan for Ukraine to present to Washington. Starmer stressed the urgency of the situation:
"This is not a moment for more talk. It&rsquo;s time to act. Time to step up, lead, and unite around a new plan for a just and enduring peace."
The UK has also committed approximately $2 billion in funding for Ukraine, reinforcing its role as a steadfast ally. Starmer emphasized that while Europe must take on more responsibility, continued American backing remains crucial.
A Deepening Rift Between the US and Europe?
This urgent European response follows a contentious meeting at the White House just days earlier, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy clashed with US President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that their meeting ended abruptly, with Ukraine walking away without securing a much-anticipated mineral rights deal with the US. This growing diplomatic divide has led European leaders to question whether Washington is shifting its stance on Russia.
The summit in London made it clear that European nations view the US realignment with concern. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen outlined the need to strengthen Ukraine&rsquo;s economic, energy, and military resilience:
"We have to put Ukraine in a position of strength. We must ensure that it becomes a &lsquo;steel porcupine&rsquo;&mdash;indigestible for potential invaders like Russia."
Von der Leyen also called for an urgent surge in defence spending across the European Union and announced that she would present a comprehensive defence plan at an emergency summit in Brussels on March 6.
Bridging the Atlantic Divide
The geopolitical rift has prompted new diplomatic manoeuvres, particularly from the UK and Italy. After the London summit, both Starmer and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni highlighted their commitment to not only supporting Ukraine but also mending the growing divide between the US and its European allies.
"The UK and Italy will stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes,"&nbsp;read an official joint statement.
Meloni suggested that London and Rome could&nbsp;"build bridges"&nbsp;between Washington and Europe, seeking to maintain transatlantic unity despite Trump&rsquo;s increasingly unpredictable foreign policy.
