U.S. Imposes Sanctions to Block Iran Trade, Targets Four Indian Firms for Oil Dealings
In a significant escalation of its &ldquo;maximum pressure campaign&rdquo; against Iran, the United States has imposed fresh sanctions on individuals, entities, and vessels involved in the trade of Iranian oil. Among those targeted are four Indian firms, alongside several companies from China, Hong Kong, and the United Arab Emirates, accused of helping Tehran finance militant groups and destabilizing activities.
The U.S. Treasury and State Departments jointly announced sanctions on more than 30 entities, including oil brokers and shipping firms allegedly involved in facilitating the sale and transport of Iranian petroleum products. According to officials, these measures are aimed at cutting off Iran&rsquo;s ability to generate revenue from its energy exports, which Washington claims are used to fund terrorism and regional aggression.
India Among Those Hit by Sanctions
Four Indian companies have been sanctioned for allegedly participating in transactions related to Iranian oil. While the U.S. did not disclose the names of these firms in the initial announcement, officials stated that they were part of a broader network that enabled Tehran to bypass sanctions and continue oil exports despite restrictions.
&ldquo;The United States will use all our available tools to target all aspects of Iran&rsquo;s oil supply chain. Anyone dealing in Iranian oil exposes themselves to significant sanctions risk,&rdquo; said U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
Iran&rsquo;s Shadow Fleet and China's Role
The latest sanctions also target Hong Kong-based Petronix Energy Trading Ltd, which, according to the U.S. Treasury, purchased vast quantities of Iranian oil from the sanctioned Naftiran Intertrade Co. Additionally, several vessels accused of transporting &ldquo;tens of millions of barrels&rdquo; of Iranian crude oil&mdash;part of Tehran&rsquo;s so-called &ldquo;shadow fleet&rdquo;&mdash;were also blacklisted.
Iran continues to rely on a covert network of ships, brokers, and financial intermediaries to sustain its oil exports. Despite U.S. efforts to cripple Iran&rsquo;s energy sector, Tehran earns nearly $2 billion per month from oil sales, with China purchasing over 90% of its exports at discounted rates.
Washington's Commitment to Halting Iran&rsquo;s Oil Revenues
The sanctions come weeks after U.S. officials blacklisted a dozen firms from China, India, and the UAE for allegedly facilitating the shipment of Iranian crude to Beijing. U.S. officials reaffirmed that as long as Iran&rsquo;s oil revenues contribute to funding terrorism, Washington will continue taking aggressive measures to block Tehran&rsquo;s access to global markets.
"As long as Iran devotes its energy revenues to financing attacks on our allies, supporting terrorism worldwide, or engaging in destabilizing actions, we will hold the regime accountable," said State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce.
The latest crackdown underscores Washington&rsquo;s determination to drive Iran&rsquo;s oil exports to zero and prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons, reinforcing the broader geopolitical tensions between the U.S., Iran, and its key trading partners, including India and China.
