Typhoon Peipah, the 15th storm of the season, has battered central Japan, leaving 24 people injured and causing widespread damage across Shizuoka Prefecture. Local authorities reported roof tiles ripped off, utility poles collapsing, and homes left without power as strong winds and tornadoes swept through the region.
Makinohara City was the worst hit, where three people sustained serious injuries and 20 others were left with minor wounds. In Yaizu City, a farmer suffered a severe facial fracture after an agricultural greenhouse was blown away by the gale-force winds.
Chubu Electric Power confirmed that nearly 17,000 homes lost electricity at one point, although efforts are underway to restore supply. Damage has also been confirmed in Kakegawa, Yaizu, and Yoshida Town. Officials are still assessing the full scale of destruction.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said Typhoon Peipah made landfall twice on Friday, first in Kochi Prefecture on Shikoku Island in the early hours, and again in Wakayama Prefecture later in the morning, before moving eastward and weakening into an extratropical depression by nightfall.
Heavy rainfall continues to threaten large areas, including Kanto, Tokai, and Kinki regions. The JMA warned of up to 300 millimetres of rain in parts of Kanto-Koshin, including Tokyo, and urged residents to remain vigilant against landslides, flooding, and swollen rivers.
