<h3 data-start="190" data-end="265">Typhoon Kalmaegi leaves trail of destruction across central Vietnam</h3>
Typhoon Kalmaegi has wreaked havoc across Vietnam&rsquo;s Central Highlands and coastal regions, leaving five dead and seven injured, according to official disaster management authorities.
The storm struck hardest in Đắk Lắk and Gia Lai provinces late Thursday, unleashing winds of up to 149 km/h before weakening into a tropical depression early Friday.
Đắk Lắk Province reported three deaths and two injuries, while Gia Lai Province confirmed two fatalities and two injured residents. In Quảng Ng&atilde;i Province, three people sustained injuries, and three others were swept away while attempting a rescue near L&yacute; Sơn Port.
The typhoon&rsquo;s fury left 57 houses completely destroyed&mdash;45 in Gia Lai and 12 in Đắk Lắk&mdash;and damaged or unroofed 2,799 homes across affected provinces. In Đắk Lắk alone, nearly 54,000 fish-farming cages were washed away, and 11 fishing vessels were reported sunk.
Electricity infrastructure also suffered severe damage. Power supply to over 1.6 million customers was disrupted, with only 315,000 connections restored by Friday morning. Over 1.28 million households remain without power&mdash;202,156 in Quảng Ng&atilde;i, 678,995 in Gia Lai, 324,928 in Đắk Lắk, 80,900 in Đ&agrave; Nẵng, 76 in Huế, and 1,566 in Kh&aacute;nh H&ograve;a.
Floodwaters have also eroded vital transport links. In Gia Lai, a 25-metre stretch of road leading to Đắk Pờ T&oacute; Bridgeon the Trường Sơn Đ&ocirc;ng route collapsed, cutting off local access.
By early Friday, Kalmaegi had dissipated into a low-pressure zone over southern Laos. However, powerful residual winds&mdash;up to 117 km/h&mdash;continued to lash parts of Đắk Lắk, Gia Lai, and Quảng Ng&atilde;i, compounding the region&rsquo;s devastation.
Authorities are now assessing the full extent of the losses as recovery efforts continue amid widespread infrastructure damage and communication breakdowns.
