San Jose police confirmed that two victims suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to a local hospital. Officers urged the public to avoid the area while they secured the mall and assessed the situation.
Authorities later clarified that the incident was isolated and did not involve an active shooter threat. However, officers continued to evacuate and sweep the mall to ensure there were no additional risks to shoppers or staff.
Witnesses described a scene of confusion and fear as shots were heard. Videos posted on social media showed crowds running for cover, stores locking down, and families hiding in storage rooms as police arrived.
Several shoppers shared their experiences online, describing multiple gunshots, people screaming, and the rush to find safe spaces. Many reported sheltering with other customers inside shops until officers cleared the mall.
Some witnesses said they heard as many as 15 shots before stores began shutting their gates. Others recalled being near exits when the gunfire erupted and running to safety.
