Tensions in the Middle East escalated after Israel launched a rare airstrike in Qatar&rsquo;s capital, Doha, on September 9, targeting Hamas&rsquo; political leadership. The attack killed at least six people, including five Hamas members and a Qatari security officer, sparking global condemnation and straining diplomatic ties.
Qatar denounced the strike as a violation of its sovereignty and international law. The prime minister and foreign minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, called it &ldquo;state terrorism&rdquo; and argued that the strike undermined Qatar&rsquo;s role as a mediator in Gaza ceasefire talks.
In response, US President Donald Trump on Sunday warned Israel to exercise caution. While reiterating that Qatar is a &ldquo;great ally,&rdquo; he stressed that nations &ldquo;must be careful&rdquo; in choosing their targets. Trump confirmed that Washington was informed of the strike only moments before it occurred and described the Israeli decision as unilateral. Reports also indicate that he held a heated call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following the attack.
The airstrike has not only heightened friction between Qatar and Israel but also complicated US diplomacy in the region, as both are key American allies. In reaction, Qatar has called an emergency summit with Arab and Islamic states to discuss a coordinated response and measures to prevent future attacks.
Despite the strike, Qatar reaffirmed its commitment to working with Egypt and the US to push forward with ceasefire negotiations in Gaza. However, officials stressed that the attack represented an assault on mediation efforts themselves, further destabilising regional dynamics.
