For nearly three years, Europe has watched a bloody conflict reshape its security map as <a title="Russia Putin" href="https://www.benefitnews24.com/international/putin-warns-against-foreign-troops-in-ukraine/18871" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Russian</a> forces grind through Ukrainian territory. Yet this week, the war spilled beyond the battlefield into an equally bitter war of words &mdash; pitting Washington and Moscow in a clash of rhetoric that reveals much about global power struggles.
At the centre of the storm is <a title="USA trump" href="https://www.benefitnews24.com/international/trump-warns-100-tariff-on-russian-oil-buyers/16393" target="_blank" rel="noopener">U.S.</a> President Donald Trump, who has long claimed he could &ldquo;end the war in a day&rdquo; if given the chance. After meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Trump declared that Kyiv could &ldquo;reclaim all the territory lost&rdquo; since Russia&rsquo;s full-scale invasion of 2022. He hailed Ukraine&rsquo;s &ldquo;great spirit&rdquo; and suggested Russia&rsquo;s inability to secure a swift victory made it look like &ldquo;a paper tiger.&rdquo;
&ldquo;Any real military power,&rdquo; Trump said, &ldquo;would have taken less than a week to finish what Russia has dragged on for nearly four years.&rdquo;
<h3 data-start="1442" data-end="1472">Kremlin strikes back</h3>
The Kremlin&rsquo;s response was swift, mocking and unapologetic. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed Trump&rsquo;s remarks, warning that it was a &ldquo;mistake&rdquo; to assume Ukraine could reverse Russia&rsquo;s territorial gains. He emphasised that Moscow would continue with its &ldquo;special military operation&rdquo; because, in his words, it had &ldquo;no alternative.&rdquo;
Peskov went further, turning Trump&rsquo;s jibe on its head. &ldquo;Russia is hardly a tiger,&rdquo; he remarked. &ldquo;It is more often associated with a bear. And there&rsquo;s no such thing as a paper bear. Russia is a real bear. Putin has described our bear many times, and in different tones. There&rsquo;s nothing paper about it.&rdquo;

The rhetorical sparring also extended into energy politics, an arena where American and European interests are deeply entangled. Trump has urged countries including China, India and EU member states to stop buying Russian oil as a way to choke Moscow&rsquo;s war machine. Yet Peskov accused Washington of hypocrisy, claiming that Trump&rsquo;s real motive was commercial.
&ldquo;The simplest thing is to force the whole world to buy more expensive American oil and liquefied gas,&rdquo; Peskov argued. &ldquo;And without resorting to any elaborate diplomatic manoeuvres, that&rsquo;s essentially what he is doing.&rdquo;
It is a telling point: while European capitals scramble to diversify energy supplies and insulate their economies from Russian gas, Washington&rsquo;s energy exports have surged. For Moscow, that reinforces the narrative that sanctions are less about punishing aggression than about cementing U.S. economic dominance.
<h3 data-start="3047" data-end="3082">Frustration in Washington</h3>
For Trump, the war is also personal. He has failed to deliver on his campaign pledge to &ldquo;buy peace&rdquo; between Russia and Ukraine. Each fresh statement reveals frustration, shifting tone and political calculation. He has criticised Russia&rsquo;s performance in the war, praised Ukraine&rsquo;s resilience, and urged pressure on Moscow &mdash; yet he has carefully avoided placing blame directly on President Vladimir Putin.
When pressed this week on whether Putin could be trusted in negotiations, Trump deflected: &ldquo;I&rsquo;ll let you know in about a month.&rdquo;
That ambiguity has long been a feature of Trump&rsquo;s foreign policy instincts &mdash; torn between scepticism of endless wars, admiration for strongmen, and his businessman&rsquo;s eye on deals. For Europeans, this uncertainty fuels anxiety: Washington remains Kyiv&rsquo;s indispensable backer, but American leadership is increasingly unpredictable.
<h3 data-start="3955" data-end="3983">The bigger picture</h3>
Behind the exchange of insults lies a deeper truth: nearly four years into Russia&rsquo;s invasion, neither side has achieved a decisive breakthrough. Ukraine&rsquo;s drone strikes have dented Russian oil infrastructure, fuelling shortages and record petrol prices inside Russia. Moscow, meanwhile, continues to occupy swathes of territory with no sign of retreat.
Europe and America frame the war as a defence of international order. Russia frames it as an existential struggle for its security and identity. Between these narratives, Ukraine continues to pay the highest price in blood and destruction.
As the war of words escalates, one fact is clear: the battlefield may not be the only front where the future of this conflict is decided.
