US President Donald Trump has set his sights on resolving the ongoing Ukraine war, aiming to add it to the ninth major conflict he claims to have ended through his diplomatic tactics. Trump explained that Russian President Vladimir Putin&rsquo;s reluctance to end the war stems from limited trade relations with the United States, which makes tariff threats ineffective.
Since returning to the office, Trump has branded himself as the &ldquo;president of peace,&rdquo; asserting that he has successfully mediated eight global conflicts, including those involving India-Pakistan, Israel-Hamas, and Armenia-Azerbaijan. In most of these cases, he claims to have relied on economic pressure, especially tariffs, to force negotiations.
With Russia, however, Trump has taken a different route. In October, he imposed sanctions on major Russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil, striking at the heart of the nation&rsquo;s energy sector. The move, announced by the US Treasury, was designed to pressure Moscow into initiating peace talks with Ukraine.
Trump has also tightened restrictions on Russia&rsquo;s trading allies, including India and China. India, in particular, has faced higher import tariffs, rising to 50 per cent, over its continued purchase of Russian oil. The US president said he expects both India and China to scale back on such imports, though New Delhi has denied making any formal commitment.
The Ukraine war, which began in 2022, remains Europe&rsquo;s deadliest conflict since World War II. Despite mounting sanctions and diplomatic pressure, Trump has yet to achieve a ceasefire. Nevertheless, he remains confident that his economic strategy will eventually compel Moscow to the negotiating table.
