That meeting, meant to explore an off-ramp from the war, has left NATO capitals uneasy. For Europe, the prospect that Washington could lean towards Moscow&rsquo;s line &mdash; rather than defending Kyiv&rsquo;s red lines &mdash; signals a dangerous shift in the transatlantic security architecture.
The stakes for Ukraine are existential. The country&rsquo;s drive to join NATO was one of the sparks that ignited Russia&rsquo;s full-scale invasion. To abandon that ambition under duress would not only shake Kyiv&rsquo;s political identity but also leave other frontline states doubting the credibility of Western security guarantees.

The timing only sharpens the pressure. This Monday&rsquo;s talks will come after a summer of military stalemate on the battlefield and at a moment when Kyiv needs new security assurances. Whether Trump offers those guarantees &mdash; or trades them away for Russian concessions &mdash; may determine not just Ukraine&rsquo;s survival, but the future credibility of the Western alliance.
For now, Kyiv enters Washington cornered, NATO rattled, and Moscow quietly pleased. The real question is whether Trump&rsquo;s peace initiative is a diplomatic masterstroke or the opening chapter of Ukraine&rsquo;s forced retreat.
