In a strong show of alignment, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orb&aacute;n met with President Donald Trump at the White House their first official meeting in six years and Trump&rsquo;s first state visit since returning to office. The encounter underscored both leaders&rsquo; shared populist message and defiance toward liberal globalism.
Orb&aacute;n, who has long faced criticism from EU leaders and Western media for his hardline immigration stance and defense of national sovereignty, arrived in Washington declaring Hungary a &ldquo;special island of difference&rdquo; in an otherwise liberal European Union.
Trump personally greeted Orb&aacute;n outside the White House just after noon, the two exchanging smiles and handshakes before heading inside for talks. When asked by reporters if he might meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest, Trump replied with a grin, &ldquo;There&rsquo;s always a chance a very good chance.&rdquo;
Once inside, Orb&aacute;n wasted no time criticizing the previous Biden administration, accusing Democrats of having &ldquo;ruined&rdquo; U.S.&ndash;Hungary relations. He praised Trump for quickly repairing the damage, calling it the beginning of a &ldquo;golden age&rdquo; between the two nations.
&ldquo;The reason we are here is to open a new chapter between the United States and Hungary,&rdquo; Orb&aacute;n said. &ldquo;During the Democrat administration, everything was ruined a lot of harm was done. But in the last 10 months, President Trump restored what was broken.&rdquo;
Trump, in turn, described Orb&aacute;n as one of Europe&rsquo;s few leaders with &ldquo;the courage to stand up against failed immigration policies.&rdquo; He said the Hungarian leader was &ldquo;respected all over,&rdquo; even if not liked by all his peers.
&ldquo;If you look at Europe, they&rsquo;ve made tremendous mistakes on immigration,&rdquo; Trump said. &ldquo;He has not made that mistake. He&rsquo;s respected by everybody and I can tell you, I both like and respect him.&rdquo;
Orb&aacute;n reinforced his conservative message, describing his government as the only one in Europe that &ldquo;openly identifies as Christian.&rdquo;
&ldquo;We are the only government in Europe that considers itself a modern Christian government,&rdquo; Orb&aacute;n said. &ldquo;Others are liberal or leftist, but we follow a different path. Hungary is a special island of difference in a liberal ocean.&rdquo;
The Hungarian leader&rsquo;s remarks were a clear statement of defiance toward Brussels and EU officials who have long accused Budapest of eroding democratic norms.
For Trump, the meeting symbolized his renewed foreign policy approach one centered on sovereignty, nationalism, and strong bilateral ties with ideologically aligned nations. Both leaders signaled that the United States and Hungary will continue to strengthen cooperation based on shared values of faith, identity, and independence from globalist influence.
