US President Donald Trump is set to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday for a high-stakes discussion on a Gaza peace plan. The meeting will include a joint press conference at 1:15 pm US Eastern time (10:45 pm IST).
The proposed US-led 21-point deal reportedly includes a ceasefire, the release of hostages held by Hamas, and the disarmament of the militant group. On Sunday, Trump expressed optimism, saying on Truth Social: &ldquo;All are on board for something special, first time ever. We will get it done!!&rdquo;
However, Netanyahu has shown reluctance to halt Israel&rsquo;s Gaza City offensive, which has displaced thousands in recent weeks. Analysts note that while Trump is usually a staunch ally, he has lately expressed frustration with Netanyahu, opposing Israel&rsquo;s West Bank annexation plans and a recent strike on Hamas operatives in Qatar.
Families of Israeli hostages have urged Trump to stand firm on the ceasefire proposal. &ldquo;We respectfully ask you to stand firm against any attempts to sabotage the deal you have brought forth,&rdquo; wrote the Hostages and Missing Families Forum in an open letter.
Reports suggest that Tony Blair may be considered to head a Gaza International Transitional Authority, backed by the UN and Gulf states, before governance is transferred to a reformed Palestinian Authority (PA). Yet Netanyahu rejected the PA&rsquo;s return to Gaza, calling its reform &ldquo;unlikely.&rdquo;
The war in Gaza, sparked by Hamas&rsquo;s October 2023 terror attack that killed 1,219 people in Israel, has since claimed over 66,000 Palestinian lives under Israeli bombardment. The outcome of the Washington talks may depend on how much pressure Trump applies to Netanyahu to accept the deal.
