US President Donald Trump on Thursday unveiled the &lsquo;Board of Peace&rsquo; at the World Economic Forum in Davos, announcing a new global body aimed at resolving international conflicts. Several world leaders joined Trump on stage for the launch and signed the charter establishing the board. Trump is also expected to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later in the day to discuss a possible ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict.
The announcement came a day after Trump withdrew his threat to impose tariffs on eight European countries following discussions with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. The tariffs, which were set to go as high as 25 per cent from February 1, had been linked to Trump&rsquo;s push for greater US control over Greenland.
Trump said talks with NATO had resulted in a &ldquo;framework of a future deal&rdquo; focused on Greenland and broader Arctic security. NATO described the discussions as productive and said any framework would centre on maintaining stability in the Arctic region. However, Rutte clarified that the issue of Greenland&rsquo;s political status or its continued association with Denmark was not discussed.
Trump has repeatedly argued that the United States needs a stronger role in Greenland to counter growing Russian and Chinese influence in the strategically important and resource-rich Arctic. His earlier remarks had sparked serious transatlantic tensions and raised concerns about unity within NATO.
The change in tone brought relief in Denmark, where Trump&rsquo;s previous statements had caused shock. Danish Foreign Minister Lars L&oslash;kke Rasmussen welcomed the decision to pause the trade conflict and rule out aggressive action related to Greenland.
Despite the easing of tensions, the European Union has temporarily frozen progress on a trade agreement with the United States. The European Parliament postponed a planned ratification vote, citing concerns over threats to the sovereignty of an EU member state and the use of tariffs as a coercive tool.
As Trump continues his high-level engagements at Davos, attention remains on whether the newly announced Board of Peace and the Greenland framework will lead to lasting stability in global diplomacy and transatlantic relations.
