In a rare moment of levity between two long-time rivals, US President Donald Trump lightened his tone towards Hillary Clinton after she suggested he deserved a Nobel Peace Prize, if he managed to broker peace in Ukraine.
As seen on a podcast, Clinton said that if Trump could secure an end to the Russia-Ukraine war without forcing Kyiv to give up territory, she would nominate him for the prestigious award. &ldquo;If President Trump were the architect of that, I&rsquo;d nominate him for a Nobel Peace Prize,&rdquo; Clinton said, adding that a genuine stand against Vladimir Putin would be historic.
Trump, asked about Clinton&rsquo;s comments aboard Air Force One on his way to Alaska for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, smiled at the idea. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s very nice,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I might have to start liking her again.&rdquo;
Trump predicted that the talks with Putin would &ldquo;work out very well&rdquo; but made clear that any agreement must involve Ukraine&rsquo;s approval. &ldquo;There&rsquo;s no deal until there&rsquo;s a deal and Zelensky has to agree,&rdquo; he stressed.
For Clinton, who has long been one of Trump&rsquo;s fiercest critics, the remark marked an unexpected shift in tone. For Trump, it was an unusual moment of humor directed at his 2016 election rival. Whether the goodwill lasts beyond the Alaska summit remains to be seen.
