US President Donald Trump has once again asserted that he prevented a potential war between India and Pakistan last year, suggesting the conflict could have escalated into a nuclear confrontation. He said economic pressure, particularly the threat of tariffs, played a key role in persuading both sides to step back.
During a recent interview, Trump stated that several international conflicts were resolved using trade measures, placing the India-Pakistan situation among them. He described the tensions as severe and claimed military losses had already occurred, adding that the risk of nuclear escalation was real in his assessment.
Trump also said Pakistan&rsquo;s leadership credited him with saving millions of lives by helping halt the hostilities. According to him, the warning of economic consequences was instrumental in bringing the confrontation to an end.
Thepresident has repeated similar claims numerous times since May last year, when he announced on social media that the two neighbours had agreed to a &ldquo;full and immediate&rdquo; ceasefire following discussions involving Washington.
India, however, has consistently rejected suggestions of third-party mediation, maintaining that matters concerning Pakistan are addressed bilaterally.
The tensions followed India&rsquo;s launch of Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The strikes came in response to the April 22 attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 civilians, sharply escalating regional hostilities at the time.
