Thailand&rsquo;s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has been suspended from her official duties after the Constitutional Court accepted a petition seeking her removal over a controversial leaked phone call concerning Cambodian border matters.
The court, in a unanimous ruling on Tuesday, ordered Paetongtarn to step aside pending a final verdict. The judges said the suspension was a necessary interim measure to prevent "serious and irreparable damage" to national interests.
Until the court issues its final decision, Paetongtarn is prohibited from managing affairs related to national security, foreign policy, and finance, according to Xinhua news agency.
The suspension follows a complaint filed by a group of senators who allege that Paetongtarn violated constitutional ethics during a private phone conversation with Cambodian Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen.
The issue ignited public outrage, leading to mass protests in Bangkok last week, with demonstrators demanding her immediate resignation.
In response to the ruling, Paetongtarn said she respectfully accepts the court's decision and intends to submit her official explanation within the 15-day window granted.
Deputy Prime Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit is expected to assume the role of acting Prime Minister and will lead the new cabinet in a swearing-in ceremony scheduled for Thursday.
Earlier on Tuesday, King Maha Vajiralongkorn approved a cabinet reshuffle originally proposed by Paetongtarn, prior to the court&rsquo;s ruling. The reshuffle comes amid the withdrawal of a major coalition party from the government.
Paetongtarn, 38, leader of the Pheu Thai Party and daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, was elected Prime Minister in August 2024, becoming the country's youngest and second female leader.
