Ceasefire Tested as Cambodia Accused of Border Violations
Barely 24 hours after an official ceasefire agreement was declared between <a title="Thailand" href="https://www.benefitnews24.com/international/ceasefire-sealed-in-thai-cambodia-border-clash/17129" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Thailand</a> and <a title="Cambodia" href="https://www.benefitnews24.com/international/trump-ties-trade-to-thai-cambodian-ceasefire/17090" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cambodia</a>, tensions have reignited along contested stretches of the border. Despite initial optimism following a late-night truce signed in Malaysia, Thailand&rsquo;s military on Tuesday accused Cambodia of multiple ceasefire violations, casting doubt on the durability of the fragile peace.
The ceasefire, brokered with the involvement of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and diplomatically endorsed by the United States and China, came into effect at midnight on 28th July. In a social media post early Tuesday, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that "the frontline has eased since the ceasefire at 12 midnight," suggesting calm had returned to the disputed areas.
However, the Thai Army swiftly refuted that version of events. According to military sources, Cambodian forces opened fire on Thai positions at five locations: Chong An Ma, Chong Bok, Prasat Ta Kwai, Phu Makhuea, and Sam Tae &mdash; areas long prone to volatility due to unresolved demarcation issues dating back to colonial times. Thai commanders labelled the shelling a deliberate violation of trust, stating that retaliatory fire was carried out under the right to self-defence.
The recent flare-up follows days of intense fighting, which has already claimed at least 38 lives and displaced close to 300,000 civilians. It marks the deadliest escalation since the 2008&ndash;2011 border skirmishes that erupted over competing territorial claims influenced by French-era cartography.

Though Cambodia denies any breach of agreement, the Thai Foreign Ministry has reiterated its commitment to bilateral dialogue, noting that the ceasefire is only a &ldquo;first step&rdquo; in a broader roadmap to peace. Ministry spokesman Nikorndej Balankura stated that no territorial decisions were made, and upcoming talks will strictly focus on military de-escalation and humanitarian relief.
As part of the framework agreed in Malaysia, regional army commanders from both nations are scheduled to meet informally on 29th July, with formal discussions slated for 4th August in Phnom Penh under the General Border Committee (GBC). Malaysia, in its role as ASEAN chair, has pledged to coordinate a regional observer mission to monitor compliance and facilitate confidence-building.
The United Nations has also urged restraint. A spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General called upon both governments to "create an environment conducive to addressing long-standing issues and achieving lasting peace."
Nevertheless, with each side questioning the other&rsquo;s intent and the spectre of historic animosities looming large, the coming days will determine whether this ceasefire marks a genuine turning point&mdash;or yet another fleeting pause in a cycle of mistrust and militarised confrontation.
