Texas Republican leader Alexander Duncan has drawn criticism after opposing the installation of a 90-foot Hanuman statue, known as the &lsquo;Statue of Union,&rsquo; in Sugar Land, Texas. Duncan argued that the United States is a Christian nation and questioned the presence of the Hindu monument.
His remarks, citing Biblical verses against idol worship, were posted on social media alongside footage of the statue located at the Shri Ashtalakshmi Temple.
The Hindu American Foundation condemned the comments as &ldquo;anti-Hindu and inflammatory&rdquo; and filed a formal complaint with the Texas Republican Party, urging disciplinary action. Netizens also rebuked Duncan, stressing that the U.S. Constitution protects religious freedom for all faiths.
The Statue of Union, unveiled in August 2024, stands as North America&rsquo;s tallest Hanuman statue at 90 feet. Conceived by Sri Chinnajeeyar Swamiji, it symbolises devotion, unity, and service. The monument, named for Hanuman&rsquo;s role in reuniting Lord Ram and Sita, is designed to inspire hope and peace across generations.
