A tragic shooting unfolded at a secondary school in Graz on Tuesday morning, leaving ten people dead and dozens injured in what police have described as a &ldquo;contained situation.&rdquo;
The incident occurred at the BORG Dreiersch&uuml;tzengasse high school, located in the northwest of Graz, a city of around 300,000 and capital of the southern Austrian province of Styria. Police confirmed that students and an adult lost their lives during the attack.
Initial reports suggest the assailant, believed to be a student at the school, opened fire shortly after 10 a.m. before taking his own life when confronted by armed officers.
Graz Police said they received an emergency call around 10 a.m., prompting a major response involving local officers, special tactical units from the Cobra team, emergency medical personnel, and a police helicopter.
A full-scale evacuation was carried out, and by 11:30 a.m., authorities confirmed that all pupils and staff had been moved to a safe location. The building was declared secure shortly after, with police stating there was no ongoing threat to the public.
A total of 28 individuals, including both students and teachers, were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The extent of their injuries has not yet been disclosed.
Law enforcement officials are working under the assumption that the gunman acted alone. An investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the shooting and how the weapon was acquired.
Officers remained on the scene through the afternoon, securing the perimeter and speaking with witnesses. Forensic teams have been deployed to gather evidence as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Local authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation and await official updates as efforts continue to piece together the events that led to the fatal rampage.
