Five severed human heads were discovered hanging from ropes at a popular beach in Puerto Lopez, sending shockwaves through Ecuador and underscoring the country&rsquo;s deepening security crisis.
The remains were found early Sunday along the shoreline, accompanied by a handwritten sign. Authorities believe the message was intended as a warning to local fishermen and criminal groups operating in the area. According to investigators, the note suggested retaliation against those involved in extorting fishermen through so called protection payments, locally referred to as vaccine cards.
Police officials say the killings are likely linked to an ongoing conflict between rival criminal groups competing for control over coastal territory. The beach, usually known for tourism and fishing, has increasingly become a flashpoint in a broader struggle between gangs seeking dominance over drug trafficking routes.
The incident comes just weeks after another deadly attack at the same beach, where gunmen opened fire on a crowd, killing six people including a toddler. Days later, a separate shooting during New Year&rsquo;s Eve celebrations in the nearby port city of Manta left six more dead, again including a minor.
Manabi province, where Puerto Lopez is located, has emerged as a strategic corridor for organised crime. Its ports and coastline are seen as crucial for the movement of narcotics, making the region a battleground for armed groups vying for influence and profit.
Ecuador has been grappling with a surge in violence for more than four years, following its transformation into a key hub for the storage and distribution of drugs moving from Colombia and Peru to international markets. The scale of the crisis has intensified sharply, with 2025 recording more than 9,000 homicides, marking the deadliest year on record.
The instability has also spilled into national politics. In October 2025, President Daniel Noboa survived an attack on his motorcade during a protest, an incident authorities described as an attempted assassination amid rising anger over security conditions and government policies.
