The US Senate has confirmed Sergio Gor as the next United States Ambassador to India, marking a significant diplomatic appointment in a strategically vital region.
Gor, 38, is a close ally of former President Donald Trump and a seasoned political strategist. His nomination was approved in an en bloc Senate vote on Tuesday, which cleared 107 appointments despite the ongoing government shutdown. The final tally stood at 51 in favour and 47 against.
Alongside Gor, Paul Kapur was confirmed as Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs, and Anjani Sinha as Ambassador to Singapore.
A long-time Trump confidant, Gor was nominated in August to serve both as Ambassador to India and as Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs. He previously held the post of Director of Presidential Personnel in Washington.
At his Senate confirmation hearing, Gor highlighted India as a key strategic partner whose rise will shape global stability. He emphasised strengthening US-India trade ties to enhance competitiveness and counterbalance China&rsquo;s influence in the region.
Indian Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, welcomed the appointment, describing Gor as one of Trump&rsquo;s most trusted aides and calling the nomination a sign of the strong importance Washington places on its ties with New Delhi.
